July 31 @ 5:30 pm - 6:15 pm

Event Series Event Series (See All)
$15

Wednesday from 5:30pm to 6:15pm at the Cedar Rapids Mott Bldg location.

“Trauma-Informed Yoga and Somatic Movement.” Trauma-informed yoga (TIY) is an evidence-based somatic practice that helps release stored trauma energy to better regulate one’s nervous system, become less reactive to triggering situations, and spend more time in your authentic self. These exercises will teach you to be more present by harnessing your own power and choice with movement, to increase vagal (parasympathetic) tone to calm an overactive and easily stimulated sympathetic nervous system that may have developed from various types of trauma (early childhood attachment and/or later traumatic experiences).

Gretchen Portait

Gretchen

Hi, I’m Gretchen and Yoga is my passion, and sharing it fuels my soul!  I am a wife, mom to four, and Gigi to the most amazing kids on earth. I love music, all genres and decades.

I started my yoga journey with some online classes as a way to move my body and build strength after back surgery. I found my way to the beginner series and it changed everything for me. The seeker in me wanted to learn everything I could about yoga.

I signed up for my 200 hour yoga teacher training even though initially I didn’t have an interest in teaching. However, as we neared the end of our training, and the more I learned about yoga and myself, the more I knew I wanted to share it with the world. Through this journey, I found new respect and honor for my body that I never experienced prior to my yoga journey.  Since then I completed an additional 300 hour yoga teacher trailer, along with an additional 100 hours in Yoga for the Mind.

What can you expect from one of my classes? My goal is to create a space where everyone feels welcome, no matter your yoga experience, and to provide a heart-centered space for all. You can expect salutations, forward folds, somatic movements, and twists with opportunities to build strength along with plenty of encouragement to find freedom in your body. I also encourage breathwork for mind-body connection and postures guided with breath.
