Conditions we care for

ADHD care that goes beyond just a prescription.

Whether you are a parent wondering if your child has ADHD, an adult who finally suspects you do, or someone tired of being on a stimulant that does not seem to be helping, we treat ADHD as a whole-person condition.

ADHD is more than focus

"Sleep, regulation, sensory load, and self-image all play a role."

What this looks like

ADHD is not a character flaw.

Many adults diagnosed with ADHD as adults describe the same realization: a lifetime of struggling with things other people seemed to find easy, told they were lazy, unmotivated, scattered, dramatic. The diagnosis often comes with grief about all the years it went unnamed.

For children and adolescents, ADHD shows up differently depending on age and personality: the kid who cannot sit still, the dreamy quiet kid who is always behind on assignments, the bright teen whose grades inexplicably drop. Two children with the same diagnosis can look completely different.

Our ADHD care includes thorough evaluation (not a 10-minute checklist), thoughtful medication management for those who want it, and a broader view of what supports executive function: sleep, nutrition, environment, therapy, and the relationships around the patient.

We do not push medication

Some patients benefit. Others find different paths work better.

How we treat adhd

ADHD care, your way.

Treatment for ADHD is not just stimulants. It is a sequenced combination of what each individual actually needs.

Comprehensive Evaluation

Diagnosis is not a checkbox. We use standardized rating scales, clinical interview, history, and where appropriate, collateral input from family, partners, or teachers. We screen for what else may be present: anxiety, depression, trauma, learning differences, sleep disorders.

Psychiatry & Medication Management

Stimulants and non-stimulants both have a role. We prescribe carefully, adjust thoughtfully, and watch for side effects. Medication is not the only option, and we will tell you honestly when something else might serve you better.

Therapy & Skills-Based Support

Executive function coaching, CBT adapted for ADHD, parent training for children, and work on the self-image wounds that often come with growing up undiagnosed. Therapy is often what makes medication actually translate into a different life.

How treatment works

From your first call to ongoing care.

No surprises. Here is exactly what the path from your first call to ongoing treatment looks like at our clinic.

01

Reach out.

Book online or call us at (319) 800-2125 (Cedar Rapids) or (340) 244-9658 (St. Thomas). A free 15-minute consultation is the easiest way to start if you are not sure where to begin.

02

Initial evaluation.

A 60 to 90 minute conversation with a clinician. Full psychiatric and medical history, a review of what you have already tried, and a conversation about what you actually want out of treatment.

03

Your individualized plan.

We build a treatment plan with you, not for you. It may include therapy, medication, ketamine-assisted psychotherapy, functional medicine workups, or a combination. We explain the why behind every recommendation.

04

Treatment begins.

You start the plan we built together. Sessions are scheduled around your life. In-person at our Cedar Rapids or St. Thomas clinics, or via secure telehealth where appropriate.

05

Ongoing care and adjustment.

Mental health is not linear. We check in, measure progress, adjust the plan when things change, and coordinate with your other providers when that helps.

ADHD presentations we commonly treat.

ADHD looks different in different people and at different ages. The right treatment depends on which presentation you actually have.

01Can adults be diagnosed with ADHD?

Yes. Many adults are diagnosed in their 30s, 40s, 50s, or later. ADHD does not begin in adulthood (the symptoms are present in childhood by definition), but it is often missed. Adult evaluation includes reviewing childhood history.

A full ADHD evaluation typically takes 60 to 90 minutes for the initial appointment, plus standardized rating scales completed before or between visits. For children, we often gather input from parents and, with consent, teachers.

No. Stimulants are one tool. Non-stimulant medications, therapy, executive function coaching, and addressing co-occurring sleep or mood issues are all part of the picture. Some patients do best without medication.

When used as prescribed for ADHD, stimulants have a low risk of addiction. Patients with ADHD treated with appropriate medication actually have lower rates of substance use disorders than those left untreated. That said, we screen for risk factors and prescribe carefully.

Most psychiatry visits and medication management are covered by insurance. Some specialty testing or extended evaluations may not be. We discuss cost before scheduling.

That happens often, and the evaluation process is designed to handle it. We gather standardized input from multiple sources and present what we find. The conversation about treatment, if any, comes after the evaluation, not before.

Yes, most ADHD care can be delivered via telehealth, including evaluation and medication management. Some prescribing rules vary by state and substance schedule; we explain what applies to you.
